Mitie rises through the ranks with A- Climate Change score
- Mitie has been awarded an A- Climate Change score by leading ESG ratings agency, CDP, up from a C in 2019
- This score makes Mitie one of only 65 UK businesses to be rated in the ‘Leadership’ category
Mitie has been awarded an ‘A-’ Climate Change score by CDP, one of the world’s leading environment, social and governance (ESG) ratings agencies. This is a significant jump up from the ‘C’ rating achieved in 2019, moving Mitie from an ‘awareness’ level to a ‘leadership’ level in just one year. In particular, Mitie scored highly in the ‘Emissions reductions initiatives’ and ‘Governance’ categories.
Mitie joins around 9,500 other companies from around the world that disclosed climate change data through the CDP in 2020. As well as being one of only 65 UK companies to be graded in the leadership category, Mitie is the only UK Facilities Management1 business to receive a leadership rating.
With CDP widely recognised as the global disclosure system for investors, companies, cities, states and regions to manage their environmental impacts, receiving this rating demonstrates Mitie’s significant work over the past 12 months to tackle the climate crisis. This includes the launch of Plan Zero in February 2020 – Mitie’s commitment to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2025 while also supporting Mitie’s clients to achieve their own sustainability targets.
In less than a year, Mitie has already made great progress towards achieving its net zero carbon emissions target. In October 2020, Mitie achieved its goal of switching 20% of its car and small van fleet to electric – three months ahead of target. Mitie now has over 800 fully electric vehicles on the road and is rolling out around 25 more every week. The business has also switched all of its offices to renewable energy2 and is planning on reinvesting the financial savings to improve biodiversity at its office locations.
As well as improving its own sustainability credentials, Mitie is helping its clients to tackle climate change too. In the financial year 2019/20, Mitie Energy saved 300,000 tonnes of carbon for its customers, and in the last three years saved 25,000 tonnes – equivalent to £10 million – for Vodafone UK.
Simon King, Director of Sustainability and Social Value, said:
“We’re incredibly proud to see our hard work and ambition recognised by CDP in being awarded an ‘A-’ Climate Change score, putting us in the Leadership category. Rising two levels in a single year, is testament to the significant progress that Mitie has made towards becoming one of the UK’s leading sustainable businesses. We look forward to working with our customers to share our experiences, and help even more companies cut their carbon emissions.”
