Mitie wins waste management contract at the University of Leeds
- Mitie has been awarded a new contract to deliver waste management services for the University of Leeds
- Sustainability is a key focus of the contract, with Mitie implementing circular approaches to resources to support the University’s net zero goals
- The contract builds on Mitie’s sector expertise delivering waste management services for higher education
Mitie has been awarded a new contract with the University of Leeds, one of the UK’s largest universities, to deliver waste management services for two years, with the option of up to two further one-year extensions. This new partnership with Mitie marks the first time that the majority of waste management services across the University will be brought together under one provider, enabling a more unified approach to reducing waste and carbon emissions.
The contract will see Mitie deliver waste management services across the University’s central Leeds campus and its other sites in and around the city, supporting the reduction of waste through enhanced recycling and the re-use of resources. Mitie’s sustainability credentials will play a key role in delivering this contract, with the work contributing to the University’s Climate Plan, which includes the ambition to deliver net zero emissions by 2030, as well as the University’s commitment to reduce single-use plastics.
This new partnership with the University of Leeds builds on Mitie’s sector expertise delivering waste management services for higher education institutions, with similar contracts at several other Universities across the UK.
Michael Taylor, Managing Director, Mitie Waste, said:
“We’re proud to be bringing our higher education sector expertise to this new partnership with the University of Leeds. We share its commitment to sustainability and look forward to implementing our ‘resource, not waste’ philosophy in reducing food waste, single-use plastics, and enhancing recycling to support the University’s commitment of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2030.”
Michael Longstaff, Interim Deputy Director, Estates & Facilities, University of Leeds said:
“We consistently review our services to ensure they align with the University’s ambitions and contribute to a positive experience for students and staff. I look forward to exploring ways of working with Mitie.”
