Mitie becomes a Construct Zero Business to drive decarbonisation
- Mitie has become a Business Champion for the Construct Zero Performance Framework, the Construction Leadership Council’s (CLC) initiative to help the construction and facilities management industries support the decarbonisation of Britain’s built environment
- The appointment as a Business Champion is recognition of Mitie’s commitment to use its energy management and engineering expertise to help organisations meet their own sustainability targets
- As a Business Champion, Mitie will work with the CLC to share best practice on how to make buildings net zero
Mitie, the UK’s leading facilities and carbon management services company, has been named a Business Champion for the Construct Zero Performance Framework, the Construction Leadership Council’s (CLC) initiative to ensure construction and facilities management businesses play a bigger role in helping decarbonise Britain’s built environment. Mitie’s appointment as a Business Champion is testament to its sustainability leadership and its commitment to support the decarbonisation of Britain by using its expertise to help other businesses achieve their net zero targets.
The Construct Zero Performance Framework consists of a set of commitments the Business Champions have made to help their customers cut carbon emissions, such as helping retrofit buildings to increase their energy efficiency and installing electric vehicle (EV) charge points to support the nation’s switch to EVs. As part of the initiative, the CLC will collect data to track the progress towards the commitments. This will also be used to encourage businesses to compare how they stack up to the rest of the construction and facilities management sector and create healthy competition in the drive to decarbonise Britain.
To be a Construct Zero Business Champion, organisations must provide evidence of their net zero target and the initiatives they are implementing to become more sustainable. Businesses that have been selected as Champions will work closely with the Construction Leadership Council to share guidance and best practice for the benefit of the construction and facilities management industries and in turn their clients.
“We’re thrilled to have been appointed Business Champion for the Construct Zero initiative. Mitie is committed to fighting climate change by leading the industry in sustainability and sharing our expertise so that more businesses can reduce their environmental impact too. This recognition from the CLC demonstrates that we’re delivering on this commitment.”
Kath Fontana, Managing Director, Projects, Mitie
Mitie’s appointment as a Business Champion part of its Plan Zero commitment to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2025, 25 years ahead of the UK Government’s target. To achieve this goal, Mitie is using its facilities, fleet and energy management and engineering expertise to implement solutions, like using only renewable energy and installing heat pumps, to decarbonise all of its 53 sites across the UK and to switch its entire fleet of vehicles to electric.
As part of Plan Zero, Mitie has also committed to using its experience and expertise decarbonising its own operations to help customers reach their net zero targets. Mitie has already saved 353,000 tonnes of carbon for its customers over the last decade and £19m in 2020/21 alone, by optimising energy consumption and implementing intelligent monitoring systems.
